Maybe I’m just not cut out for expensive jeans! Final verdict They’re not included here because the styles were too different from the Kmart pair, mostly because the ‘high rise’ waists didn’t sit as high as you’d expect a traditional mom jean to. In fairness to this brand, while researching for this article I also tried on $400+ jeans from Mother, Paige and Zimmerman and didn’t like any of those either. Perhaps I can’t appreciate the nuances of high end designer denim or perhaps it was the more figure-hugging cut that just wasn’t to my liking, but this was not for me. I would like to preface my judgement on this pair by saying that I am not a denim connoisseur who only washes their jeans once a quarter, I’m an average jean-wearing person who until now has never tried on a $400 pair of jeans, but I have to admit that this was by far my least favourite of the four jeans I tried. Where it did feel a little tight was across the waist (I’m wearing a size 25) which I was assured by a knowledgeable sales person is a sign of the right fit as this kind of denim needs to be worn in and given the chance to stretch and mould to your body, essentially customising itself to you. It’s a 98 per cent cotton, two per cent spandex blend that is incredibly soft and flexible with a bit of stretch.ĭespite being the most fitted pair I tried on, the denim didn’t feel tight or restrictive along the leg. The best thing about these jeans is the quality of the denim which is just beautiful. It’s also different from the Kmart pair in that it sits a little lower on my waist, just below my bellybutton, and finishes above my ankle rather than on it. Credit: Bianca Soldani/Īlthough this pair of jeans is a high rise with a slim leg like the previous pairs, it’s much more fitted around the hips and thighs making it less like a traditional 90s mom jean which I don’t really love. AG Jeans: Mari Crop - $409 I don’t think expensive jeans are for me, this was not the style I was looking for. I’d imagine this is the finish the Kmart jeans are (mirroring), it feels like you could wear them all day and still not want to take them off when you get home.īut do I honestly think they feel $225 nicer than the Kmart pair, no, they really don’t - and they certainly don’t look that different either, at least not in a photo or from a distance.Ĭlose up you can tell this is a more expensive pair of jeans and, if my budget stretched that far, I know which I’d be choosing. The denim is what really sets this pair apart from the other two - it can only be described as delicious, so soft and comfortable and flexible. Unlike the Kmart pair, which only comes in the one colour, this style comes in a range of different denims - as does the Neuw pair, by the way. I found the leg to be slightly more relaxed but in these photos I’m trying on a size 26 which is a little too big. Credit: Bianca Soldani/Īgain this was a very similar style of jean to the Kmart one super high waist, ankle length, slim leg with a taper. Nobody Denim Frankie Jean: $249 I loved this pair from Nobody Denim but would’ve guessed the price is closer to the $150 to 200 mark. They look and feel like a higher end version of the Kmart jeans - which they essentially are. To see how they measure up against designer labels, I took my Kmart Mum jeans to high-end department store David Jones and tried them on alongside three other pairs of denim at more expensive price points. For $25 they’re comfy, fit well and photograph well, so I can see why they’ve been so popular on social media. However, I don’t think the average person would notice those kinds of things when you’re wearing them, and if you pair them with a slightly more upmarket tee and pair of shoes, I doubt anyone who isn’t a hardcore denim aficionado would pick them for a $25 pair. If you look closely enough you start to see details that give these jeans away as a cheaper make, like the slightly uneven stitching in places or the not perfectly straight waistband. Credit: Bianca Soldani/ Here’s what the back of the Kmart jeans looks like. Bianca wearing the cult-favourite $25 Kmart Mum Jeans. It’s actually quite soft on the inside, but more in the this-material-is-cheap kind of way rather than the buttery, costs-hundreds-of-dollars kind of way you get from luxury denim brands. It’s a blend of 98 per cent cotton 2 pre cent elastane which makes for a comfy wear. The denim itself is a little stretchy and definitely not as firm feeling as your ordinary high street jeans. I’m wearing a size 6 and the butt is form-fitting but not in an exaggerated, skin-tight way.
