(It is fitting that both Williams and Pileggi were in this episode since they previously worked together on The X-Files.) The episode spent enough time giving Rufus and Bobby buddy scenes that Rufus's death had more of an immediate impact than either of the Campbells. If killing off the Campbells wasn't enough, Rufus ( Steven Williams) was also dispatched this episode. She had never been developed into a fully fleshed-out character, but she was the least offensive of the Campbell clan and had some potential to be an interesting character. Oddly, I was more disappointed in Gwen's death than in Samuel's. Bringing him back from the dead, only to turn him into a villain who would go so far as to sacrifice his own grandchildren to bring his dead daughter back from the grave was convoluted at best. What a waste of both Pileggi and his character. ![]() That both Samuel and Gwen were killed off in this episode would indicate that the Campbell storyline is finished. What was surprising was that they let him walk off alone in the first place, even if it was only for a few seconds. When Grandpa Samuel ( Mitch Pileggi) wandered off by himself, it was not surprising that he ended up with the monster in his head. After that, there was not enough anxiety built into the story about who would be infected next, especially since they already knew how to flush out the monster with electricity by the time we got to the confrontation with Dean, Sam, Bobby and Rufus. We already knew that the Mother of All could send a seemingly average person on a murderous rampage, but the sight of Dean shooting Gwen without warning was a bombshell. ![]() The first killing, when Dean shot Gwen, was truly shocking. Supernatural tried to build tension in the same way, by keeping us guessing who was infected with the earworm-ish monster. "And Then There Were None" was reminiscent of the superior X-Files episode " Ice" (which was itself an homage to John Carpenter's The Thing), although "Ice" was more successful in building a layer of paranoia into the story.
